Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture to engage youth in agriculture through various programs, including the BBT-Avocado initiative aimed at promoting avocado farming. The program will employ 50 agricultural graduates for 12 months to provide extension services in the Rugwe District, Mbeya Region.

Job Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for both positions include:

  • Providing professional advice to farmers and stakeholders in the avocado value chain.
  • Educating farmers on best agricultural practices for avocados.
  • Monitoring the quality of raw avocados from the farm to the warehouse.
  • Preparing and submitting weekly reports on avocado farming progress.
  • Overseeing the distribution of subsidized avocado farming inputs.
  • Conducting assessments of avocado production at the end of each season.
  • Collaborating with village leadership to select lead farmers.
  • Supervising assistant agricultural extension officers (for Agricultural Officer position).

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications for both positions include:

  • Honesty, ethical behavior, dedication, and good interpersonal skills.
  • Age between 18 and 40 years for Agricultural Officer; 18 and 35 years for Assistant Agricultural Officer.
  • Relevant degree or diploma from a government-recognized institution.
  • No prior employment or dismissal from public service.
  • No criminal record.
  • Willingness to work in rural areas and effectively without supervision.
  • Prepared to work under a temporary contract with specified monthly allowances.
  • Experience in avocado farming is an added advantage.
