When is it hardest to get a job in Zambia?

Finding a job is rarely straightforward – but for many people, certain stages of their career journey can feel particularly difficult.

Recently, we asked our community: When did you find it hardest to get a job in Zambia?

Here’s what you told us:

  • Post School/Graduation – 55%

  • Mid-career – 25%

  • During economic downturn – 7%

  • Other – 13%

What do these results mean?

It is clear from the poll that the majority (55%) of people found it hardest to secure a job after finishing school or graduating. This is not surprising. At this stage, many young people are entering the labour market for the first time – often competing against candidates with more skills and experience.

However, the results also highlight that challenges are not limited to new entrants. Mid-career professionals (25%) may struggle to move up or transition into new industries, while economic downturns (7%) can create obstacles for everyone.

The 13% who selected “Other” also remind us that each career journey is unique – with personal circumstances, geography, or industry factors all playing a role.

So how do people move beyond these barriers? While experiences differ, successful strategies often include:
