Panel Interview Preparation
Panel interviews involve multiple interviewers and can be intimidating. However, with the right preparation, you can approach them confidently and effectively.
1. Know who’s in the room
Before the interview, inquire about the names and roles of the panelists. Conduct some research by:
- Reviewing their LinkedIn profiles
- Identifying shared connections or interests
2. Talk to everyone in the panel
During a panel interview, it is important to engage with all panelists rather than focusing on one individual. Avoid the temptation to direct most of your responses to the most senior member or the friendliest face. Instead:
- Make eye contact with each person
- Address all panelists in your responses
- Maintain a warm and open tone
3. Use real stories
Sharing personal experiences can make your answers more impactful. For example, instead of providing a generic response, you might say, “At my last job, we had a challenging client who nearly canceled. I intervened, listened to their concerns, and managed to secure a larger order.”
4. Handle tough questions without hesitation
Be prepared for challenging questions such as “What’s your biggest weakness?” or “Why should we choose you?” Respond honestly and strategically, demonstrating growth and self-awareness. For instance, you could say, “I used to find it difficult to say no, but I’ve learned that setting clear boundaries improves team dynamics.”
5. End with a bang
When asked, “Do you have anything else to add?” or “Do you have a question for us?”, seize the opportunity to express your enthusiasm. Instead of saying, “I don’t have any questions,” consider saying, “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with this team.”
